A running list of features “missing” from OS X and possible substitutes:

  • Modern programming language (sorry Objective C)
  • “Maximize” button that fills the whole screen
  • UI/Sound/Cursor Themes
  • Efficient and full-featured remote desktop protocol
  • One-click switching between documents/dialogs of a single open application
  • Full-Screen mode in Safari/Firefox
  • “Run” command – QuickSilver
  • Tree view access to applications/filesystem (like the Start Menu)
  • Widget integration with UI (as in KDE)
  • Finder:
    • Shell extensions
    • Dropdown menu for each path level (as in Vista)
    • Customizable per-folder view (XP +)
    • Auto-complete in dialogs
    • File information in side column (Windows 98+)
    • Multiple independent panes
    • Application rapid-start precaching/optimization
    • Tabs
